The Belgian was handed his first start of the season in United’s 2-0 win against Burnley and was praised by Jose Mourinho afterwards for his display. Belgium face Scotland in a friendly on Friday before opening their Nations League campaign against Iceland three days later but Fellaini will not feature in either game.
The 30-year-old has been struggling with a knee injury throughout the last 18 months and will now be a doubt for United’s clash with Watford in nine days’ time.
The injury comes at a bad time for United, who will be hoping to kick on after a poor start to the season. Should Fellaini fail to recover in time it could be a reprieve for new boy Fred. The Brazilian was benched for the win against Burnley after starting the first three games following his £52m move from Shakhtar Donestsk.
